I was also around for the early 70's when the DOW went below 600. Surprisingly that was a time when mutual funds with good managers did better than individuals betting on single stock picks. A good fund manager was quicker at moving away from companies that didn't gain stock value. Later, in the 80's individual stock investors did better and it was easier to find an ATARI (1200% in 4 months). Todays market is much harder to anticipate.

Current storage hardware is about to become obsolete and we are betting that EMC will use the new systems as they come with the best service to the customer. But its scary because we know IBM missed out on the personal computer phase when they were the end-all-be-all of computing.

I continue to buy my choice stocks but advise newbies to go for the mutual funds for the next two years.
