Tough turf! Teams call game at Vet
Associated Press
Tuesday, August 14, 2001

Philadelphia --- The NFL exhibition opener for the Baltimore Ravens and Philadelphia Eagles was postponed Monday night because of problems with the turf at Veterans Stadium. Officials from both teams thought uneven cutouts in the field could affect players' footing. Some fans smashed will-call windows and other areas outside the 30-year-old stadium. Commissioner Paul Tagliabue will decide today if the game will be made up. Both teams have two games in the next 11 days. ''It was completely unanimous from everybody's perspective,'' Eagles president Joe Banner said. ''The field is not suitable to playing. . . . We've been going through this for years. It's not acceptable.'' Eagles cornerback Troy Vincent said players actually sank into the turf on parts of the field near the infield cutouts. The Eagles, who share Veterans Stadium with baseball's Philadelphia Phillies, use large squares of turf to cover the areas surrounding infield dirt patches.
