Hi. I've been reading the board for a little while and am wondering if anyone could offer some commentary/suggestions. This is basic stuff so please bear with me, I am a relative novice with computers and getting old and slow.

Recently I spoke with a young man who seems very knowledgeable about computers (good job in computers with a major hospital) - recommended by a friend for whom he did some work, upgrading a computer.

We are looking for a new computer that will be used primarily for use on financial sites and trading. We only have a regular phone hook-up now but hope (not sure) to get a dsl, cable broadband or satellite hook-up to improve speed. We may do a little with graphics, video (digital pictures?) but probably very little. We need a good audio hook-up.

It was suggested we get a Dell with:

Windows 2000k (he said ME is not good and XP still has problems - I note recent comments here that XP will be available soon yet I heard on CNBC yesterday or today shipment will be delayed. My point being I really don't like Msft nor their products but have little choice. If W2000k works well I'd rather not trust a new mass market product - really don't trust them - I can't solve problems myself as many of you do.)

a Pentium III (not IV - not clear but I think I understood) at 1GH minimum

probably 512MG of Ram
---- is there a specific form or type of Ram that is important?

20G hard drive

he mentioned a Nvidia card, an ethenet port and the best modem (which is?)

Although more expensive, we are looking at a flat-panel monitor; are they truly better for the eyes? Certainly lighter and that is a consideration.

That was all. We may need other things I am not aware of. Any suggestions appreciated.

I visited the Dell site and it appears I could get that kind of set up through their 'workstation' line. Would this do the job? Better or more/other needed components?

David
