Unfortunately, a recent study prepared under contract for the CDMA Development Group by a well-known wireless consulting company, focused only on the "possible advantages" of one option while raising questions about the "possible challenges" of the other. Judges are accustomed to defense lawyers showcasing carefully selected bits of evidence to create the notion of reasonable doubt, but investment analysts and wireless executives demand more balanced analyses of investment risks. Toward that end, this article examines three prime factors impacting a TDMA operator’s choice between a GSM-based solution utilizing a GPRS core network, upgradable to both EDGE and Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) air interfaces, or the CDMA2000 1X route to meet the same 3G requirements.
