What do you think would happen if I went to Control Panel and tried to uninstall the patch from there?

If you see something there that says it's the shutdown patch (very doubtful)I can't see how you'd do any damage. Have you tried the windows troubleshooter within 98? Go to help, type troubleshoot and open "Startup and Shutdown Troubleshooter".

Didn't you get a recovery cd from HP? You might be able to extract the needed files from there. I've got a 2 year old HP8275 at work with recovery cds and can test it for you if you'd like.

Here's a step by step shutdown page. It may be your only option.
