HK PCCW Threatens Legal Action Against Rumormongers
Dow Jones Newswires

HONG KONG -- Pacific Century Cyberworks Ltd. (PCW) said late Tuesday it has threatened legal action against the source of what it called unfounded rumors that the company is planning large staff cuts soon.

PCCW Chief Operating Officer, William Cheung, said the company is exploring its legal options if and when the source of the rumors is identified.

In a statement published on its Web site, the company said "we do not know the source of these rumors, but any employee found to be spreading false and malicious rumors about the company may be subject to disciplinary action.

As reported Tuesday, PCCW denied it planned to cut more jobs at the moment, a point Cheung reiterated in the latest statement.

His remarks come in response to a recent report in the Oriental Daily News that PCCW plans to cut close to 3000 jobs.
