Maurice: Excuse my ignorance, but could you please explain the sequence of events for a signal transmission in a "bent pipe" system? Is it telephone to nearest satellite to nearest gateway and then land based lines? Or is it telephone to land based lines to gateway to satellite? It must be the first option. When 1-5 years is used as a time frame to fill the system I interpreted it to mean, in part, the sheer magnitude of selling to and then setting up 1+ million brand new customers. In addition, there will be the numerous inevitable bugs to work out. In this scenario both companies will be buried just trying to keep up with the demand. In reference to satellite to satellite communication planned for use with Teledesic, M-Star and Celestri, it may not be as economical as "bent pipe" but if you refer to "Lloyd's Satellite Constellation" website they are technically superior and necessary for the incredibly high speeds needed for data, videa and broadcast transmissions. M-Star and Celestri are being touted as non-competitors to Iridium. You make a good point that Motorola may not want to disclose to Iridium that they are putting up competitors but I really doubt it. First of all I am certain that when they file for FCC approval that they are required to disclose all of their intentions. In addition, the technology required for these kinds of transmissions would be dramatic overkill for voice. Why not use your sales, admin. and technical resources for the big bucks and not waste your time on voice. So you are a golfer also, I respect you more already.
