Take an emblematic situation. Suppose that a person is about to expire from die from drowning, and all I have to do is throw him a life preserver to save his life (therefore entailing no especial risk or burden on me), yet I refuse. Am I culpable in his death, for having failed to offer reasonable aid? If I am, then I am also obliged to contribute a reasonable amount to the general fund, some of which goes to emergency relief and the aid of the indigent. If I am not, then we have erected rights into inhuman idols, upon which we would sacrifice our fellow man.......
