Do you mean the CONCACAF cup... for American and E Asian teams only? Incidentally, it was Canada who got through (and later won). It wasn't the game, but who went through from a qualifying group after all games between the two contenders had finished level. southernsoccerscene.com - see February briefs.
Or were you referring to the US women's team, which 'won' their CONCACAF Gold Cup group by a coin toss last year after a drawn game... but did win the tournament? (http://www.womensoccer.com/refs/tourns/concacaf_goldcup.html - See match report at end of June)
So, was it the US women winners or the Canadian winners you were calling sissies? LOL.
<edit> I agree it's odd, though. Here, cup (knockout) tournaments use away/home goals to determine winners, then best-of-5 penalties, then sudden-death penalties, in the event of a draw. Where there's a league, there's goal difference, results against the other team, away goals, home goals, goals conceded, goals scored against the other leading teams in the group, etc... I've never heard of all these being identical before. I'm not sure how you would decide, if they were; it has to start getting arbitrary, I suppose. Number of fouls made? Who knows.
Out of curiosity, what would happen to decide a 'draw' at the top of the NFL or AFL (it is those two who go forward to Superbowl, isn't it?)? Similar criteria? |
