American Power Conversion Revolutionizes Power Management with New PowerChute(R) Family of Products for Personal, Business, and Enterprise Computing
biz.yahoo.com
WEST KINGSTON, R.I., Aug. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The growing complexity of today's Internet-enabled 24x7 economy has made it critical for companies and individuals to employ not only a power protection strategy, but also an approach to risk-management that proactively keeps systems up and running. As a known leader in the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) industry and building on over a decade of power management expertise, American Power Conversion (APC) has made this goal easier than ever with the launch of three, new revolutionary software products customized to address the specific needs of consumers, businesses and enterprises. This new family of products include: PowerChute Personal Edition v1.0 for home users, PowerChute Business Edition v6.0 for small or medium-sized business, and PowerChute Inventory Manager v2.0 for large enterprise networks.

``APC was the first company to develop power management software in 1989 and since then we have remained at the forefront of innovation,'' said Rob Johnson, general manager of APC's availability enhancements group. ``These new, highly customized products incorporate intensive research on customer needs, enabling us to develop solutions tailor-made for specific customer groups. For the home user we have 'taken the guess work' out of power protection; small and medium businesses will find it easier than ever to manage their UPSs centrally; and enterprise customers can effectively and simply manage thousands of power management devices on their network infrastructure. We are confident the new PowerChute family meets and exceeds each customers' unique needs, continuing APC's legacy of providing innovative solutions to solve real customer problems.''

Each of the PowerChute products has a new, graphically rich, professionally designed interface and offer unique and customized features. A summary of these offerings include:

APC PowerChute Personal Edition v1.0

APC PowerChute Personal Edition v1.0 is the ideal choice for home APC battery backup users. This easy-to-use software can be set up in just four clicks and combines sophisticated power management functions with exceptional usability. Default settings remove the ``guesswork'' and provide first-time users with optimal protection, while seasoned users will appreciate the ability to tailor the software's behavior to their individual circumstances.

At the core of PowerChute Personal Edition is graceful, unattended shutdown and file saving capabilities. In the event of an extended power outage, the program can automatically save open Microsoft Office files, thereby helping prevent data loss.

PowerChute Personal Edition can be downloaded free of charge for PCs running Microsoft Windows Me, Windows 98 or Windows 98/SE operating systems at apcc.com .

APC PowerChute Business Edition v6.0

APC PowerChute Business Edition v6.0 is departmental-level management software that enables system administrators to provide safe system shutdown and UPS management for servers and workstations protected by APC UPSs. Users of PowerChute Business Edition, frequently small or medium-sized businesses, typically have one to twenty-five UPSs in a networked environment. With PowerChute Business Edition v6.0, customers now have the ability to manage these multiple APC UPSs simultaneously over a network from a single workstation.

PowerChute Business Edition v6.0 includes a new Windows NT/2000 based Management Console that allows network managers to quickly assess their connected equipment's power status. A simple mass configuration wizard allows managers to set settings for email or broadcast notification, UPS parameters, and shutdown behavior for multiple UPSs simultaneously over the network, ensuring consistent configuration and decreasing setup time.

Since long or frequent brownouts may indicate serious, chronic power problems, such as faulty building wiring or poor utility power, PowerChute Business Edition also alerts users to unusual power situations. Users can monitor their equipment for ``Frequent'' or ``Extended'' undervoltages, while still logging individual events in detail. Making the process even easier, when a power event occurs, PowerChute Business Edition displays a probable cause and recommends a course of action to correct the problem, reducing the need for training and speeding troubleshooting.

PowerChute Business Edition 5-Node Version is available as a free download at apcc.com. It currently includes agents for Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 (other operating systems to follow). The Windows NT/2000 based server and console can manage up to 5 agents simultaneously regardless of operating system.

PowerChute Business Edition 25-Node Version will be available by the end of August 2001 through APC's Factory store, as well as APC channel partners and resellers for an estimated resale price of $499. The 25-node version provides the convenience of managing up to 25 agents at once, taking advantage of the software's mass configuration, and centralized event handling features.

APC PowerChute Inventory Manager v2.0

APC PowerChute Inventory Manager v2.0 is enterprise-level management software that enables IT managers to capture, organize and assess vital information about their APC power infrastructure. This unique tool is built upon a robust SQL database and is a true enterprise-level management application, capable of managing up to 10,000 devices connected on a large corporate network, including APC's Smart-UPS®, Symmetra®, Silcon® UPS, and MasterSwitch(TM) managed outlet strips.

PowerChute Inventory Manager v2.0 reduces a major cause of downtime by providing detailed reports on battery age, load, health, and other critical battery facts, thereby facilitating the timely replacement of UPS batteries. Its unique downtime reports help administrators determine how much downtime was related to power versus other factors throughout their network, making Service Level Agreement (SLA) management considerably easier.

In addition, users can now set a policy for UPS variables and thresholds, such as power load, UPS or battery age, and runtime. When these thresholds are exceeded, PowerChute Inventory Manager will proactively via email alert the administrator of the problem.

PowerChute Inventory Manager v2.0 is currently available in 25 node, 100 node, 1,000 node and 10,000 node versions through APC's Factory Store, partners and resellers. An upgrade version for current owners of PowerChute Inventory Manager v1.0 is also available.
