Gee, that reminds me of an essay by Tom Wolfe. He refers to a conference on trends in the United States that he was invited to,along with a bunch of Leftist intellectuals, who were all sold on the idea that America was heading straight towards fascism. Wolfe quotes Jean- Francois Revel:" Somehow, the dark night of fascism is always descending in the United States, and yet lands only in Europe". He also quotes Gunter Grass, who was present:"For the past hour, I have had my eyes fixed on the door here. You talk about fascism and police repression. In Germany when I was a student, they come through those doors long ago. Here they must be very slow." ........
