Man plummets from city's tallest building, survives August 15, 2001, 7:47 AM
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (AP) -- A man who authorities say was attempting suicide survived a jump from the roof of downtown Battle Creek's tallest building.
The 33-year-old man, a part-time maintenance worker at Heritage Tower, survived the 255-foot descent after landing on a car that was parked directly in front of the building.
The man went up to the roof, scratched his initials, birth date and an undisclosed epitaph on concrete blocks, then jumped about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Battle Creek police Sgt. Carter Bright told the Battle Creek Enquirer.
The man was listed in critical condition Wednesday morning, said a spokeswoman at Battle Creek Health System.
The rear portion of the car's roof was crushed by the impact, and the rear window was shattered, scattering glass on the street.
