Beijing Telecom Awards Alcatel New Digital Data Network Contract
DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 15, 2001--Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) today announced it has won a multi-million dollar contract to provide Digital Data Network (DDN) solutions to Beijing Telecom, a subsidiary of China Telecom.
This is the second time Alcatel has been chosen by Beijing Telecom for the expansion of its largest DDN networks in response to increasing demand from enterprise users such as banks and offices for quality-guaranteed voice, data and multimedia services.
The project is consistent with the goal of Capital City's comprehensive campaign to make Beijing a real Digital City. The campaign, initiated by the municipal government in 1999, includes construction of broadband communications networks covering business districts, residential areas and factories all over the city while promoting the growth of e-business, e-government and e-learning. Beijing's successful bid for the 2008 Olympic Games is expected to accelerate this infrastructure construction campaign.
Recently, Alcatel also delivered and installed its industry-leading DSL (digital subscriber line) equipment, enabling Beijing Telecom to fully utilize its existing copper network to provide high-speed Internet access services to its customers. Cooperation between Alcatel and Beijing Telecom can be traced to 1985 when Beijing Telecom selected Alcatel for its first large-scale installment of advanced public switching systems.
``Beijing Telecom is committed to carrying out the Digital Beijing plan that would rapidly develop Beijing into a telecommunications center with the most advanced technology and network infrastructure in China,'' said Zhao Jidong, general manager of Beijing Telecom.
``Alcatel is fully committed to supporting Beijing with its latest technology and global experience,'' said Dominique de Boisseson, chairman and CEO of Alcatel China. ``We look forward to playing a key role in helping Beijing organize a hi-tech Olympic Games in 2008.''
For this DDN project, Alcatel will supply and install Alcatel 7470 Multiservice Platforms (MSP) and Alcatel 3600 MainStreet systems. The 7470 MSP functions as a multiprotocol, multiservices edge switch that aggregates traffic from all multiplexers and carries X.25, frame relay, leased lines, asynchronous transfer mode, multiprotocol label switching and Internet protocol.
