re: EDGE devices from Nokia

Lynette Looney's recent article on EDGE stated that "Nokia is the only handset vendor to announce it will make EDGE handsets by 2002".

I raised an eyebrow when I saw that because I had seen no statement to that effect from Nokia (or any other manufacturer).

Chalk one up for Lynette, who is fond of saying "sources close to XYZ say".

John Hoffman of GSMA has stated the following in his monthly newsletter:

Mr. John Byrne of Nokia stated on 7 June 2001 in Dublin that Nokia would have EDGE devices for the America’s in Q2 of 02 and 900/1800 EDGE devices "shortly thereafter."

I rather expected that Nokia would have committed to delivering EDGE devices to AWS, but I found the "900/1800 EDGE devices shortly thereafter" especially interesting.

So let's see. Nokia is now on the handset hook for shipping:

- The GPRS 8310 this quarter

- The GPRS 6310 and "millions" of 8310's, 6310's, and *******'s Q4 (not to mention a 1900 MHz model).

- Nokia 1xRTT model or models Q4

- 1900 MHz EDGE (and maybe EDGE 850/1900) Q2 02

- Dual-Mode, Multi-Band WCDMA models Q3 02 with "millions" Q4 02.

That is a pretty full plate of promise-ware.
