Re: If SOI is so great...

Motorola went from 450MHZ on .18 copper to 800MHZ .18 copper/SOI. But when that stepping changed, they also lengthened the pipeline, so we can't attribute it all to SOI.

But Motorola got a much bigger jump from moving from 5 to 7 pipeline stages adding SOI than Intel got when it went from a 12 stage pipeline to a 20-26 stage pipeline. Motorola went from not being able to get much to bin over 400MHZ (remember Steve Job's diatribes against Motorola for not being able to supply the "faster" parts?) to dropping the 700MHZ part because nothing was binning that low.

One stepping plus SOI got them a 100% clock speed increase.
