long-gone, I agree with you there's a real problem concerning what kinds of communication the government considers appropriate for monitoring. Sure, it could impact on one's 'freedom' but, since I have nothing to "hide", it doesn't bother me.
Crime is rampant here. SA is a haven for drug dealers, money launderers, bank robbers, hijackers, quite apart from violent crime. So, I imagine all that would be the focus of attention. People are complaining, on a daily basis, that the government does nothing about crime, so, I guess, it has to do something.
I can't believe government would be interested in monitoring the bulk of private communication on the internet. Possibly pedophilia, heavy right-wing stuff would be the focus. I could be wrong, though. They could regard ANY political activity as subversion.
I understand many governments, including the US, have laws/regulations which entitle them to monitor communications. Anyway, as I said, if one has some real secret stuff, one could encrypt it. |
