Chinton. In every sector, some stocks will emerge

as leaders. Others are average performers and some are laggards.

Although some folks like to buy laggards erronous thinking they're better values (this is the single most common pitfall I see with misapplication of FA and quantitative work sometimes used in spreadsheets), my experience is that owning at least one or two leaders will really improve your net portfolio returns over time. Of course, leaders are notoriously hard to buy. But sometimes you just have to be aggressive and pay the extra fraction if you want to run with the smart money. Counter-intuitive? Absolutely. But as you get the years under your belt, you'll discover more and more hidden applications of contrary thinking like that little gem.<G>

But, it's not always easy to tell which ones till after the Bull Market is underway. One way to adjust your portfolio is to sell the underperformers after we've had a good rally and hold the cash into the consolidation which follow to redeploy in a leader. Not easy for the average investor to do. Leaders are the last to dip during a consolidation, so it's easy to make a sloppy entry unless you really have a good feel for it's trading patterns.

But as, one of my fav market strategists at my old firm put so well, "The GOOD ones are always hard to buy."
