It isn't. That figure is ridiculous. Otherwise, I thought that the Punk, Ziegel report was excellent.
$3.9 billion worldwide
could capture a substantial portion of the market
But year 2001 penetration is projected at $982K.
Either Kaplan's estimate of the market is inflated, or he's projecting penetration that's absurdly slow. I agree that market penetration will be a real pain, but.....
The Eligix devices are excellent. IMO, they're the best available. They will save some lives. But, at best (approval in the U.S. after positive results derived from clinicals), they will NEVER achieve a "substantial portion" of $3.9 billion. Two percent would be wonderful.
The Gambro deal is a superb one. I am jazzed, and I again thank Lebowitz, Sachs, Sykes, Ogier, White-Scharf, Greenstein et al. for laboring to bring this science home. They are addressing stuff that could be invaluable for addressing a spectrum of human suffering, stuff that is difficult to fit to a business model. IMO, they are heroes. |
