Government attorneys argue the strip-search was grounded in reasonable suspicion. Kaniff was returning from Jamaica, a known drug-supplying country, after a reasonably short stay, had paid $600 cash for her ticket and didn't know the exact address of the person who was picking her up at the airport, government attorneys argue. Apparently it wasn't just a strip search but a body cavity search. And this was justified because someone paid cash for a ticket and came back from Jamaica. Even if I was a "drug warrior" I would call this an abuse. Not just the specific case but the idea that paying cash or coming from a particular country can amount to probably cause, or that a body cavity search can be imposed on someone without a warrant, or evidence that a crime has been committed.
