Allegiance surely would have been Irish; but not 'citizenship'. Let's see, the Viet Cong's citizenship was S. Vietnamese, but allegiance was N. Vietnam. Didn't do much to stop the shooting. Ireland had been independent until the British invasion. At any point, they were no more British than the British are French. (The Angles and Saxons arrived in Britain from France; the Normans invaded Britain.)
Incidentally, my understanding of the potato famine is that it was not caused by the British True. nor spread True. nor intentionally exacerbated. And there's the dispute. Ireland was part of Britain, right? You just said so. Remember those floods along the Mississippi? A lot of CA money went into helping those people, some through taxes and some through voluntary contributions. As it should have. We are one nation. Do you you think if instead of flood, the pox had been famine, we would have reacted any differently? Or if we were the victims the rest of the nation would sit back and let us starve? If Ireland was part of Britain, why is this different?
showing what could have been done (bearing in mind the realities of who ruled, their mindset, and their interests Let's see, I guess that excuses the Nazis, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot,..... anyone, really, who ever commanded or committed mass murder. |
