Via sub wins Toshiba PDA order

StrongARM of the law
By Mike Magee, 16/08/2001 08:45:19 BST

HIGH TECH, which as we reported a few weeks back scored a big deal to make personal digital assistants for Compaq, has struck a new deal to make two PDAs for Toshiba.
The firm is a subsidiary of Via, which as we've mentioned here before, is itself a subsidiary of Formosa Plastics, an elder brother to First International Computer (FIC), and a sister to memory company Nanya Technologies. Got that? It's complicated, and there are a lot of other IT firms in the Formosa Plastics cake.

One of the PDAs will use Intel's StrongARM 206MHz chip, have 32Mb of memory, and 3.5 inch TFT screen, but both will belong to the Toshiba Genie line.

The higher end model will also use a cutesie little 1Gb hard drive made by Big Blue.

The PDAs will also support Wince, and use SD memory cards.

High Tech's Compaq win was for an Ipaq using GPRS and expected to be ready at the beginning of the fourth quarter this year. µ
