I'm an ex-shareholder of SNDK. A big reason why I gave up on them was because as a consumer, I have been consistently disappointed in their inability to produce CF cards that are superior to the competition. SanDisk's management seem to know nothing about competitive strategy. They are neither the low-cost producer, nor are they the premium brand.

Consumers are looking for COST/PERFORMANCE. SanDisk does not make the fastest cards. Neither do they make the cheapest cards. SanDisk = mediocrity = poor COST/PERFORMANCE.

The professionals are paying a premium to buy Lexar cards because of the superior write speed. The enthusiasts are hunting down the generic brands with the Toshiba controllers (cheapest, with next-fastest write speeds).
Only the less-informed are buying SanDisk cards.

If SanDisk owns the patents to superior controller technology, together with the ability to produce state-of-the art 0.18 micron 512megabit NAND flash chips through their JV with Toshiba, WHERE THE HECK are the superior products?

The competitors are running around in circles, thumbing their noses at SNDK!
