Very interesting. Of course, the fact that Microsoft has dropped standard Netscape-style plugin support in IE 5.5 SP2 is common knowledge now. The Microsoft apologists and spin doctors will have trouble dreaming up any kind of consumer benefit from this anticompetitive action. But I'll try, on their behalf:

"It seemed that everywhere you turned, some web page was serving up QuickTime movies, iPIX VR scenes, Real Media content, Flash animations, and all that kind of crap. Our users were almost as sick and tired of all of this audiovisual overstimulation as they were trying of to get Java apps to run correctly in IE. In response to the overwhelming volume of requests from our loyal users to drop support for products that compete with Microsoft products and create a middleware threat to our operating system and applications monopolies, we did just that.

"Windows XP. Where in Hell do you want us to go today?"
