JH, I share your frustration.

To summarize your points, SanDisk needs to innovate and lead.
SanDisk needs to create a stronger brand identity.

They are not known to be the fastest or the cheapest.
They don't advertise to be either. They do try to
advertise as reliable and rugged. Many competitors
still use SanDisk as a measuring stick when it comes
to performance as a sum of cost, availability, breadth
of form factors, reliability, reptutation...

I don't think the average consumer would find a
SanDisk product unappealing, uncompetitive or
unsatisfactory for their needs.

I think Lexar wins hands down in commercial promotion
of their CompactFlash cards. We have argued that
point here many times in the past. But the commercial
promotion comes at a cost and Lexar is yet to show
a profitable quarter. SanDisk is in it for the long run.

There is still a lot of room for improvement.
There is still time for improvement.
