I think you all are using a very narrow definition of TA, and forgetting the work done before the age of real-time datafeeds, computerized analysis software, and deep discount brokers. In Dow Theory, for instance, the aim was typically to determine, by technical means, the overall trading outlook for periods ranging from months to years. Until fairly recently, most people couldn't even consider trading for anything shorter than multi-day (more likely multi-week) swings.

Some TA approaches are more appropriate to assessing the overall health of a market, others to identifying particular tradables, others to identifying entry and exit points for particular trades.
