Thomas,

Let us see what we can figure out. As far as I know
there are three main areas where lasers are used: semiconductor
production, communications and medical field. COHR
competes mainly in the medical field, though it also
produces some semiconductor production equipment. I looked at
the SI's "Medical Devices: Lasers" group and none of the
companies in the list were familiar to me. :-(

I know that HP at least partially competes in
the medical field and scientific instrument field.
Lucent and Corning are involved in the communications
field. Other players there are Tellabs and Uniphase.
Electro Scientific and GSCN are mainly involved in
the semiconductor production field.

Another way to group companies is by the lasers
used. I think that COHR's strength is gas lasers (CO2),
while other companies deal with solid-state lasers.
However, I think that COHR is developing solid-state
lasers too.

Finally, COHR is a very diversified and
vertically integrated company, so I would not be surprised
if it sells laser system parts to its competitors and buys
some other parts from them.

Disclaimer: I am not an industry expert. I hope that
some expert will be able to confirm or deny my ramblings.

Good luck

Raimondas
