Digi-Data Implements QLogic's 2 Gigabit Fibre Channel Into New Fibre Sabre 2300 RAID Controllers, Delivering More Than 160 MB/Second Sustained Disk Performance JESSUP, MD--(INTERNET WIRE)--Aug 17, 2001-- Digi-Data announced today that it has implemented QLogic Corporation's (NASDAQ:QLGC - news) ISP2300 Series 2-Gigabit intelligent Fibre Channel chips into the Digi-Data Fibre Sabre 2300 RAID System. QLogic is an industry-leading designer of end-to-end high-performance 2-Gigabit and 1-Gigabit I/O storage network connectivity solutions. The advanced features and high performance of QLogic's chips enable the Digi-Data Fibre Sabre 2300 to sustain data transfers from disks over 160 MB/second in an entry level RAID configuration of five disks (including parity). This industry-leading performance supports demanding applications including video editing, video broadcast, video-on-demand, document/image storage, and streaming media. The QLogic ISP2300 Series Fibre Channel controller is a single-chip, highly integrated, bus master Fibre Channel processor that connects a 64-bit PCI bus in the RAID controller to a 2-gigabit-per-second Fibre Channel port, supporting switched fabric, arbitrated loop, and point-to-point topologies. To maximize I/O throughput, the ISP2300 incorporates a high-speed I/O processor to support full-duplex data transfer rates up to 400 MB/second.
Digi-Data complements the QLogic chip technology with advanced RAID design features, including:
- A high performance internal memory architecture - Zero-overhead real-time hardware parity generation - Multiple RAID levels, including a true RAID 3 architecture - Advanced Duchesnian caching algorithms
Digi-Data uses the QLogic chips in a unique design to provide data integrity benefits required in high availability applications, including: continuous RAID operation after a disk fails (without performance degradation), and continuous RAID operation should a disk channel fail (without performance degradation). "QLogic continues to impress us with the capabilities of the their chips and their support in incorporating them into our sophisticated RAID designs," said Dr. Tomlinson Rauscher, President of Digi-Data. "The onboard enhanced RISC processor of the QLogic 2300 enables us to achieve performance required in the most demanding storage applications."
"We're pleased that Digi-Data selected QLogic to deliver the critical components necessary for its high-performance RAID controllers," said Frank Berry, vice president of product marketing, for QLogic's Computer Systems Group. "Digi-Data's Fibre Sabre RAID Family provides high performance to the growing RAID market, and the use of the QLogic ISP2300 chips significantly enhances throughput for high-performance environments."
