After much thought, I have determined that your complaint is indicative of a design flaw of the mirrors, and not an indication of idiocy. Adjusting the mirror to see the edge of your own car gives a frame of reference. It allows you to know where the other car is in relation to your own. If somebody nudges your mirror in the parking lot and you have it adjusted via the c.horn method, the mirror may no longer be positioned such that you are seeing what is in your blindspot....and you would never no it!!! Clearly this is a problem that can be solved by designing the product (sideview mirrors) properly.
