Actually, it is all based on a psychological theory: hostility towards homosexuals reflects anxiety about one's own sexuality. Therefore, gay bashing is homophobic (what they are really doing is to try to deny their own homoerotic feelings). Of course, this disallows the possibility that something like religious conviction could be the source of antagonism.......
