But the diversity that PC calls for on one hand is racial diversity.

It didn't start out that way. When the Clinton administration came in, Federal agencies were doing "reinvention." One of the themes of reinvention was diversity. I'm familiar with this because I wrote the bulk of one agency's reinvention plan, including the diversity piece.

Reinvention was the successor to Total Quality Management, which relied on teams to do work. In the process of shifting into team mode, people realized that teams needed diversity, in the sense that I described it. One of the big areas of diversity was introverts and extroverts. Teams needed a mix to be effective but introverts were not as naturally effective in a team environment as they were by themselves.

The original reinvention plan I wrote spoke about diversity of skills and perspectives. Racial diversity was only a subset of diversity of perspectives.

Meanwhile, affirmative action was taking more and more heat. So, the affirmative action and special-interest folks just co-opted the word, diversity, because that did not yet have negative connotations. And that was the end of real diversity as a management concept.

We still need diversity, real diversity, but it got lost in the political shuffle.
