Is there some place about which you feel the same way?
Not really. I thought I did when I lived for a few years in a small town in western Connecticut. That was really the first sense of rootedness I'd had. I spent a lot of time at a river nearby and got to know every rock and formation for about a 2 mile stretch. The area was veined with numerous streams and I found a spot near where a stream began coming out of the mountain. It was in a pine grove and I can still imagine the smells and sounds of the place. It was where I'd go to do my meditating. But the town and surrounding area changed and circumstances changed, so I left there. We still own the house and rent it out, so returning someday is a possibility.
Growing up as a military brat, putting roots down didn't enter the consciousness. (Thank you, Cold War) I have fond memories of some of the places we lived in, but they are better staying as memories. I embarked on an odyssey a few years ago and visited some of the places we were stationed in, but you know what Thomas Wolfe said...
I believe him when he says its his heaven on earth and envy him for it
I wish I could remember where I read an article by a reporter who took a tour of Bush's ranch and then wrote a lengthy piece about it. The reporter admitted being skeptical and cynical going in, but as the piece progressed, you could tell he was impressed by the place and believed Bush when he said he felt a real love for it. He went into detail when they reached a limestone formation that had water coming out of it. He related how Bush regarded it as a cathedral, and Bush became very animated when he explained to the guy his plans for the place. He's going to somehow channel the water and turn it into a waterfall, and make it so beautiful his daughters will want to get married there.
It wound up being a very favorable piece, even though the reporter said he was predisposed to write otherwise.
Yeah, I envy him too.
