I have to query your long-term terror. It has always been a huge mistake to bet against the US economy long-term. The recent action in the major stock indices has obscured what is happening in the broad market, which is in a recovery. Cobalt Blue made an excellent post on this point several weeks ago. I do not claim any great investment genius - I took my Nasdaq lumps in 2000. However, at the end of 2000 I was amazed to find that my retirement accounts, which I manage conservatively, were up 30%. If you avoided tech, this result was not that hard to achieve.
