<< "The Wide Boys"? Care to explain, for us not in the know? >>

Ah. Pardon my English. In the London markets a lot of the trading is no longer in the hands of the "gentlemen" stock-traders of yore, but a bunch of very bright Cockneys who probably left school at 14. During WWII the Cockney Barrow Boys (i.e. those who pushed barrows of fruit and other stuff around for sale) took up some aspects of the Los Angeles zoot-suiters of that era, and wore jackets with very padded shoulders. Hence "wide'. Now, of course, most have forgotten the derivation. Presumably they have their equivalent in NY. The kids who work only in arbitrage and derivatives. Maybe you don't. It still seems to be upscale over here. I know several Math PhDs who are putting in a stint with some of the trading companies.

FIDO, born within the sound of Bow Bells hence, definitionally, a Cockney.
