In light of DT's subsequent performance as well as the "success" of previous german-american collaborations like DCX, I think it's pretty clear that while such a takeover would have been a bonanza for those who sold, holders wouldn't have fared much better then they did with GX on its own.

We'll probably never know the exact reasons until Winnick writes his memoirs, but I'm convinced the real reason is that Winnick is determined to make GX huge. We have to appreciate that personalities like Gary Winnick, Joe Nacchio, James Crowe, etc. are the Morgans, Carnegies, and Goulds of our day. They are builders and shapers, not asset flippers. Whether they succeed or fail they are not going to play second fiddle to anyone, which is why sellouts are unthinkable to them.
