How did the letter X become the symbol for "kiss"? During the middle ages when most people were illiterate, contracts were indemnified by these people making a cross on the document and then kissing that "signature". The cross was chosen because it was the sign of St. Andrew and meant an honorbound guarantee. The X symbol is now the "universal shorthand for love and affection".
