Take the umbrella...Centuries ago umbrellas were used only to protect potentates from the sun. Those first umbrellas were heavy and unwieldy and were carried by slaves. In the 1700's lighter weight materials, silk and whalebone replaced leather cover and wood, made umbrellas practical. At this time they began to be used for rain cover. They didn't really catch on for men thought them effeminate and also for poor people who could not afford a carriage. It wasn't until the 1850's that umbrellas were more widely used as raingear. The umbrella continued to be used to protect people from the sun until after World War I, when sunshine and tans began to be considered healthy.
