Roger that. Jim's direct accounts from

S.A. "refugees" are exactly the kind of anecdotal information that carries a lot of weight with me. Sure adds an immediate and IMHO important personal window into what's clearly a very unattractive socio/political environment.

To be honest, the HIV problem is the single biggest reason I've not reloaded HGMCY or bot any other S.A.s since May. It's clearly an enormous future (not distant future) cost liability for those mines.

1. The recent labor accord includes a concession from the mines to shoulder "part" of all future worker health costs. That sounds like the wisper of a blank check to ole wary Isopatch.

2. Even if the actual outlays for future aids care are relatively small, consider this. Labor costs, like everything else, are subject to supply and demand. WHEN, not if, this 25% HIV + number ramps up into virulent aids? The S.A. labor pool will shrink sharply, giving the Union strong leverage to increase wages rapidly. What's that do to the bottom line of the S.A. mines vs their N.A. counterparts?

Anyway. Thanks Jim for getting me thinking about how the pieces all fit together for the next few years. Slider calls it "thinking outside the box". And I want to thank him for encouraging me to post more of my own forward thinking in the past few years.

Only 10 days to go and "The SI Dream Team" is back to full strength! In the meantime, made a stop over on the Yahoo KGC thread today to visit with the big guy and offer some covering fire.<ggg>

Cheerio!
