Dan, Re: "Re: some theories as to why there isn't a single 1.33GHz or 1.4GHz Athlon being sold Whatever the reason, it's probably the same one that applies to the lack of 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, and 1.8 P4s."
And what reason is that? It isn't cost. The Athlons are far lower cost than the Pentium 4 chips at this point. It isn't availability, either. Those Athlons have been around for months. My guess is that Compaq and HP don't like the cooling solution for high powered Athlon systems, while Intel has ensured that the cooling solution for the Pentium 4 already meets their stability requirements.
"By the way, you're confusing the cost with the selling price."
The two are indeed different, but they are also related. AMD is practically giving away Duron CPUs, and nearly losing money on each one of them. These OEMs probably pick them up for $30-40. Celerons are twice that, yet they still beat the BOM cost for the Duron. My guess is that current infrastructure, along with the low costs of i810 based motherboards with everything integrated but the kitchen sink, allow Celeron systems to be cost competitive with Duron systems, which allows Intel to charge a premium for the CPUs.
