Yet the truth is that in many respects we have less crime--and America's crime rate has been declining dramatically. Property crimes represent about nine out of 10 serious crimes. The burglary rate in Australia is 40% higher than that in the U.S., in Canada 12% higher and in England and Wales 30% higher. Sweden and the Netherlands, despite their reputations as nearly crime-free, have burglary rates 35% and 84% greater than the U.S. Only a few nations, including France and Switzerland, have lower burglary rates than the U.S. The picture is much the same for auto theft.
