We know the the rambus in the P4 cost more than the SDRAM in the Athlon machine, and we know that a 1GHZ Athlon, Quantity 1, goes for $68 on pricewatch. We also know that P4 motherboards have been running $30 to $50 more than Athlon boards, so how much do you think Intel is getting for a P4 chip? Remember that P4 is a 217mm2 chip (fewer per wafer than any other current mainstream chip), meaning that it actually costs something significant to make the things, probably $35 to $45 with packaging and testing. Do you think they're getting as much as direct variable cost for these things?

The 1.4GHZ part was the fastest part stocked by any major retailer according to this Sunday's ads (that single 1.6 was for a special order "creation station" PC only, not an in-stock machine).
