Excellent summary from Raimondas. As R. indicated there are major players such as HP etc. that target specific aspects of laser technology that fit primarily their needs.

There are also a lot of small players such as Laser Technology (LSR), Eclipse Surgical ESTI), Aygo (ZIGO), Palamar (PMTI) and many others that target certain areas-primarily in the surgical field. But you have to be very carful. Much to my dismay early this year a major investment service gave it a strong buy in the mid teens with a 12 month target of $25. Unfortunately I bought some on their recommendation. It is now a little over $3. Value Line also covers it and rates it "attractive." From here on I am sticking with Coherent only as a long term investment.

In my opinion, Coherent is the only pure player with the experience, resources and lead to remain in the forefront of the technology across the medical and other commercial applications. As R. stated they do supply other Laser companies with diferent components including many competitors. I have seen their equipment in two hospitals, and their reputation is excellent.

Check YAHOO, INDUSTRY, LASERS/SYS/COMP for more information on companies in the field.
