What is the origin of the "sandwich"?

The name was adopted in the mid-18th century for the English diplomat, John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, who had sliced meat and bread brought to him at the gaming table so that he could continue to play as he ate.

The bread/meat combination existed prior to the naming, of course, but his status gave the preparation respectability and soon it was fashionable to serve "sandwiches" on the European continent. The word was even incorporated into the French language.
