My letter to Barrons on how stupid they are regarding cable modems (and ignoring Qualcomm's HDR) :

**********************

Why cable will lose to Qualcomm's HDR technology

To the Editor :

My mouth was hanging open in disbelief as I read your article "gushing" about cable modems.

I did not see a single word mentioning Qualcomm's high data rate (HDR) technology, currently being built out by Sprint PCS and Verizon in the U.S. (and -- others overseas).

Qualcomm's HDR technology is a recognized Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) standard, known by the technical name of TIA/EIA/IS-856 (and called "1xEV" by Qualcomm).

Sprint PCS's and Verizon's 1xEV systems -- which will be completed WAY before the year 2005 (mentioned repeatedly in your article as the date when cable companies will be ready to "cash in" on cable modems) -- will :

cover virtually the entire population of the U.S.

provide Internet connections at up to 2.4 Mbps

be much cheaper to build and maintain than cable

and ... be WIRELESS.

My prediction for cable modem-related revenues in the year 2005 : ZERO.
