India - Qualcomm, Samsung Seal CDMA-Phone Deal By CT Mahabharat, Newsbytes NEW DELHI, INDIA, 20 Aug 2001, 7:53 AM CST San Diego-based wireless technology firm Qualcomm [NASDAQ:QCOM], which pioneered CDMA technology, is in talks with Korea's Samsung Electronics to manufacture affordable code division multiple access (CDMA) cell phones in India. To get a feel of the market demand, both companies are talking to Indian telecom companies, including the Reliance Group. The discussions are aimed at getting the commitment of the Indian telecom partner to buy a pre-determined number of phones each year.
Based on Qualcomm's CDMA2000 IX technology, the phones will incorporate data, video and voice facilities, which are far more advanced than those found in existing phones. Licensed to over 75 companies worldwide, Qualcomm's CDMA technology competes with two other global standards, including the global system for mobile communications (GSM) standard promoted by European firms.
