An interesting story, one which I've not read but have seen happen here, recently, among us.

You mention lurkers and yes, I've heard from some, mostly sadness about what's happened here. My own "day of rage" was met with mixed feelings, mostly sadness. I think Steven's got a point about allowing oneself to be provoked. I feel diminished by my own involvement in the ugliness and saddened. Slowly, people are being put on ignore and slowly, people pull away.
