Don't believe it. That's a 100+ billion boondoggle in the making. Iran and Iraq will never have ABM's but if they wanted to hurt us would use terrorists sneaking small weapons up to our facilities as they have done in the past. Saddam couldn't even inflict damage on nearby Israel during the Gulf War his SCUDS are so inaccurate. And he knew if he had tried using nerve gas or biological weapons that we would have dropped a neutron bomb on his head. So of course he didn't try. Nor will he ever. Besides if we fear him why didn't we take him out at the end of the war? Bush apparently wanted him in. And Cheney has done business with him since as well as with Iran through Halliburton. Business as usual behind the scenes. Russia's missile system is rotting and rusting away and they just want to make money from us dismantling it. The Soviet Empire is broken up and half of it belongs to Europe now. Russia is in no shape to fight any international war just ones against its own rebellious provinces. China is the lone threat potentially and I'd agree a defence system should be in place there. But at present any fears about China are more paranoia than anything else. China does not have the capability to defeat us unless they launched a suicidal nuke attack in which case their entire country would be obliterated within hours. And even if we had Star Wars then it would miss many of their missiles. It's never going to be perfect even with 100 billion or more invested. North Korea is no threat to anyone but its own people. They can't even afford basic foods. Their people reportedly eat grass like cattle they are so hungry. And Cuba the same. However right-wing hawks continually use these countries to try and scare us into spending money on wasteful military programs. This whole Star Wars mentality is basically dinosaur Cold War thinking by the types who miss the Cold War and the monstrous wasteful defence programs connected to the arms races. It has no place in today's world. Besaides these proponents continually lie about the pricetag. Because the program doesn't even work yet it's clearly going to take many more tens of billions to get to any point where it would be useful. And then many tens of billions more to keep it up and operational. Meanwhile it has no effect on any of the more realistic threats as face like one little terrorist bomb or a computer virus which puts us entire system off-line. We are in more danger of damage from computer viruses than the type of missiles (large slow ones) Star Wars targets. Besides, we can't afford it and it doesn't work. To pay for Star Wars would mean cutting of dozens of key programs including ones we cannot afford to cut but should be bolstering instead. Also our allies hate the idea, Rusia rejects it and we have almost zero support internationally so only a unilateral "bully" attitude would allow us to put this into place, making the world fear us but not respect us which would be bad for international business and relations. Improved anti-missille technology is a given and $$$ research is ongoing but why build a defence system for a threat which either doesn't exist, will never exist or has no credibility (like China attacking us a la Pearl Harbor which would be total suicide)? If you look at the people supporting this they all have soft money ties to the defence contractors who would be the only ones to gain. Anyone else who supports this is just buying their scare tactics and general BS.
