Microsoft's Ballmer Says Windows XP May Be Ready on Friday
By Elzio Barreto

Sao Paulo, Aug. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Microsoft Corp. Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said the final version of the company's Windows XP operating system should be ready as soon as Friday, on time for sales to begin on Oct. 25.

Ballmer, who spoke at a technology conference in Brazil, said the company is working to complete Windows XP this week and didn't anticipate a delay in putting the software on sale. Microsoft shares slumped 4.2 percent on Friday, on concern U.S. antitrust regulators may seek to change the XP operating system, forcing the software maker to delay its release.

``With a little bit of luck we will have the final version of Windows XP by Friday. That's our target,'' said Ballmer, speaking at a press conference.

A U.S. appeals court in Washington on Friday reject Microsoft's bid to delay remedy hearings in an antitrust lawsuit government regulators have filed against the company. Ballmer said the company may seek to settle the lawsuit, without providing details of possible terms.

``We continue to pursue an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court on some important legal issues that would affect the case and we have extended our wish to the new U.S. Department of Justice to try to settle the lawsuit,'' Ballmer said.
