Well, it actually happened much more recently, and right here in the US. Look up your history on the New Deal under Roosevelt. Also, look at how much Reagan spent on the military. Those two spending efforts flooded the economy with money. Of course, there was the debt hangover from Reagan, but you can't argue that it doesn't bolster the economy in the short term. There is incontrovertable evidence that it does. Also, remember that part of the economics formula for GDP includes the big G (gov't spending), in addition to the big C(consumer spending), minus the big T (taxes). Then there is the multiplier effect from C and G spending that also expands the economic pie and bolsters the markets.
