Andreas,

<What's your opinion on this announcement? >

Seems to be a vapor launch ahead of Intel's announcement of moving Celeron to the GHz space. Looks like AMD decided that all the Durons above 950MHz are going to be Morgans.

<Okay, there is no volume and no launch partners but that's not what I find the most surprising. What strikes me is that Morgan is apparently "released" before Palomino. >

I do not know if that is the case. I would not be surprised to see Palamino desktops in retail before Morgan shows up.

<Could it be that Palomino bins so low that AMD has to "salvage" parts and uses them for the 1 GHz Duron?>

The probability of what you doubt is very low. My suspicion is that AMD is lining up some kind of PR campaign (could be for PR rating or could be for something else) for Palomino and doesn't want to tip its hand.

<Unfortunately there's no information on the AMD homepage wether the Morgan is from Dresden or from Austin. I hope that we'll have some pictures tomorrow when the reviews start to appear so we can judge if they are "real" Morgans or crippled Palominos.>

I have no idea on what AMD is doing with respect to dies but AMD needs to consolidate as many products as possible under a single die to improve operations efficiency and get a few more higher GHz parts to be sold as Athlons or Mobile Athlons and use the lower GHz parts as Mobile Durons.

Productizing more than one core out of Fab25 (Duron) would be a waste of engineering resources which could be put to better use on Hammer or chipsets.
