Oh, I mean many newer immigrants are not as receptive to the melting/blending in process as they once were.
In other words in my opinion and from what I have seen up close and personal here in NJ for the last twenty years or so, the great American Melting Pot no longer has a warm fire under it's kettle.... Let me make it even clearer.... When I was a young kid, my friends were from parents from many different countries, Italy, Cuba, Germany, Ireland, Puerto Rico (not really a separate country yet, but almost), England, Columbia, Mexico, etc, etc -- but from what I have seen recently, the immigrant parents are now isolating their kids as much as possible, and making sure their mother tongue is learned first before English is introduced, which is backwards from the way it should be if these people have come to live here as real Americans and blend in with time.... And many of these new immigrants are quite honest and arrogant and freely admit they want their kids to be Syrians or Mexicans or whatever first, and Americans second. So, this attitude will continue to grow as long as the government continues it's liberal immigration policies. And I will certainly not hold my breath waiting for the government to change and get tougher, because they do not have the courage or will to do so. |
